Quick Answer: What does floor tiling in Abu Dhabi involve?Floor tiling involves preparing a level base, setting out the layout, spreading adhesive, laying tiles with even gaps, then grouting and sealing. ALHUD Technical LLC lays ceramic, porcelain and stone tiles in villas, apartments, offices and shops, and replaces cracked or loose tiles on existing floors.

Floor Tiling in Abu Dhabi

Tile is the default floor for most Abu Dhabi homes, and for good reason. It stays cool, resists dust and sand, handles spills and cleans easily. A poor tiling job, though, shows up straight away: lippage between tiles, hollow sounds when you walk, cracked grout or uneven slopes in wet areas. ALHUD Technical LLC provides floor tiling across Abu Dhabi, with attention to the base, the layout and the finish.

We work on new floors, replacement floors and repairs, from a single bathroom to a whole villa.

Tile Types We Lay

  • Porcelain: dense, hard-wearing and low in water absorption, popular for floors
  • Ceramic: a good choice for walls and lighter-use floors
  • Marble and natural stone: a premium look that needs sealing and care
  • Large-format tiles: fewer joints and a clean finish, but need a very flat base
  • Mosaic and decorative tiles: for features, borders and wet rooms
  • Outdoor and anti-slip tiles: for balconies, terraces and pool surrounds

For stone worktops and surfaces, see our granite installation service, and for marble care in general, our team can advise on sealing.

Why the Base Decides the Result

Tiles do not hide an uneven base. They follow it. A slab with dips and humps gives you lippage, where one tile edge sits higher than its neighbour, and tiles that sit on voids can crack when walked on. We check the surface with a straight edge and level, then correct it with levelling compound or by grinding high spots before tiling.

Large-format tiles need an especially flat base, so we flatten more carefully and use the right trowel and technique to get full adhesive contact. Hollow patches under tiles are the main cause of cracking, and they are avoided by proper spreading and back-buttering.

Wet Areas, Waterproofing and Falls

Bathrooms, balconies and kitchens need more than tiles. Water must be kept out of the slab and led to the drain. We apply waterproofing in wet areas before tiling, and lay floors to a gentle fall towards the drain. Skipping this step is the most common reason for leaks and damp in the room below. For existing leaks, see our work on kitchen renovation projects, where floors, plumbing and finishes are coordinated.

Outdoor and balcony tiles face sun, heat and sand, so we choose anti-slip finishes and flexible adhesives that tolerate expansion.

Layout, Spacing and Grouting

A good layout starts with the room, not the first tile. We set out from the centre or the most visible line, so cut tiles at the edges are balanced and not tiny slivers. Spacers keep gaps even, and grout is chosen for the area: cement-based for most floors, and epoxy grout where stain and moisture resistance matter. Grout lines are finished tidy, and stone is sealed afterwards.

  • Check the room squareness and set a datum line
  • Dry-lay key areas to check the cuts
  • Use the right adhesive for the tile and base
  • Keep gaps even and tiles flush
  • Allow the adhesive to cure before grouting
  • Clean off residue and seal where needed

Replacing Cracked and Loose Tiles

A single cracked tile does not mean a new floor. We cut out the damaged tile, clean the bed and fit a replacement. Finding a matching tile is the challenge, so keep any spares from the original job. If many tiles sound hollow, the issue may be the base or moisture, and we investigate before repairing. A fresh grout line can also renew an old floor, and heavily stained grout can be cleaned or replaced.

How a Floor Tiling Job Works

  1. Site visit. We measure the area, check the base and talk through the tile, layout and grout choices.
  2. Quote and plan. You get the scope, price and timeline, including strip-out and preparation.
  3. Strip-out and preparation. Old tiles are removed if needed, the base is cleaned, levelled and waterproofed where required.
  4. Laying. Tiles are set out, laid with the right adhesive and checked for level.
  5. Grouting and finishing. Grout is applied, tiles are cleaned and sealed if needed, and trims are fitted.
  6. Handover. We walk through with you and explain care instructions.

Tile adhesive needs time to cure before heavy use, so we tell you when the floor can be walked on and when furniture can return.

Tiles in Villas, Apartments and Commercial Spaces

Villas have large open areas where tile consistency matters, and long runs of grout lines that must stay straight. Apartments often have smaller rooms and tighter access. Commercial spaces need slip-resistant, durable finishes and fast turnaround. Floors that meet other materials need neat transitions, such as to wood flooring.

The same applies where tile meets vinyl flooring in an adjoining room.

What Affects the Cost of Floor Tiling

  • The area and the number of rooms
  • The tile type, size and pattern
  • The condition of the base and any levelling
  • Waterproofing in wet areas
  • Removal of old tiles and disposal
  • Access, stairs and working hours

We confirm the price after the site visit. Photos and measurements on WhatsApp help us estimate before we visit.

Caring for Tiled Floors

Sweep regularly, mop with a suitable cleaner and avoid acid cleaners on stone or certain grouts. Seal natural stone and re-seal as advised. Wipe spills quickly on porous tiles. See our villa renovation page for larger projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does floor tiling take?

It depends on the area, the tile size and the preparation. We give you a timeline after the site visit, including curing time before the floor can be used.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, if they are firmly fixed and flat enough. It raises the floor level and can affect doors, so we check before recommending it.

Why do tiles sound hollow?

Hollow tiles have gaps in the adhesive beneath them. They can crack under load, and the cause may be poor spreading or an uneven base.

Do you waterproof bathrooms and balconies?

Yes. Wet areas need waterproofing and falls to the drain before tiling, and we apply this as part of the job.

Can you repair a single cracked tile?

Usually yes. We cut out the damaged tile and fit a replacement. A matching tile is needed, so keep spares from the original installation.

What is the best tile for Abu Dhabi homes?

Porcelain is a common choice for floors because it is dense and hard-wearing. The best option depends on the room, the look and the budget.

Do you handle marble and stone?

Yes. We lay natural stone tiles and advise on sealing and care, which are important for marble and some other stones.
