Quick Answer

Most AC leaks come from a blocked condensate drain line, a low refrigerant charge causing coil icing that later melts, or a damaged drain pan — each with a different fix, so identifying which one is happening matters before attempting a repair.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking?

Blocked Drain Line — the Most Common Cause

Condensate is supposed to drain continuously through a small pipe; when algae or sludge narrows that pipe, water backs up and eventually overflows the drip pan or drips visibly from the indoor unit. This is usually fixable with a proper line flush rather than any part replacement.

Low Refrigerant and Ice Melt

A unit low on refrigerant can develop ice on the evaporator coil, and when that ice eventually melts, it can produce more water than the drain system is set up to handle at once, causing a leak that seems to appear suddenly. Weak cooling before the leak started is a useful sign pointing toward this cause rather than a simple blockage.

Physical Damage or Poor Installation

A cracked drain pan, a disconnected or incorrectly sloped drain line, or a unit that wasn't installed level to begin with can all cause leaking independent of any blockage or refrigerant issue. These usually require a technician to identify, since they're not always visible without opening the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to keep using a leaking AC?

It's generally fine short-term, but continued leaking can damage ceilings, walls or flooring, so it's worth having it checked promptly rather than left indefinitely.

Can I fix an AC leak myself?

A basic drain line clear at the external outlet is sometimes possible, but diagnosing between a blockage, refrigerant issue or physical damage is best left to a technician.

Does AC leaking always mean something is broken?

Not necessarily broken beyond repair — most leaks are maintenance issues like a blocked drain line rather than a sign the unit needs replacing.
