Air conditioning cools and recirculates existing indoor air, removing heat and some moisture, while ventilation exchanges indoor air with fresh outdoor air. A comfortable, healthy indoor space generally needs both, not one instead of the other.
An AC system takes the air already inside a room, passes it over a cold coil to remove heat and some humidity, and returns it to the same space. It's very effective at temperature and moisture control, but on its own it doesn't introduce fresh outdoor air or remove indoor pollutants that build up over time.
Ventilation, whether through natural airflow, exhaust fans, or a mechanical fresh-air system, brings outdoor air in and pushes stale indoor air out, diluting pollutants, odours and excess CO2 that accumulate in a sealed, air-conditioned space. In hot climates, ventilation is often limited to avoid letting in heat and humidity, which is part of why AC systems end up recirculating the same air for long stretches.
A tightly sealed, well-air-conditioned home can still develop poor indoor air quality over time if it's never ventilated, since pollutants and CO2 simply build up with nowhere to go. Balancing efficient cooling with periodic ventilation, or a mechanical fresh-air system in larger buildings, gives both comfort and healthier air.
