Quick Answer

A standard split AC usually takes about 2 to 4 hours to install. A window unit is often done in 1 to 2 hours, a multi-split or ducted system can take 1 to several days, and a large VRF or central system can run to days or weeks depending on size. These are general ranges. The real time depends on pipe length, wall type, electrical readiness, building rules and access, which is why a site survey comes first.

If you're planning a new AC, one of the first questions is how long the job will take and how much of your day it will use. The honest answer is that it depends on the system. This guide breaks down the time for each type, what happens during the work and what slows an installation down. If you want a firm figure for your own property, our team can confirm it after a visit. How Long Does It Take to Install an Air Conditioner?

The time depends mostly on the type of system and the number of indoor units. These are typical ranges for a simple job with no surprises. Treat them as a guide.

  • Window or through-wall unit: about 1 to 2 hours when the opening already exists
  • Single split AC: about 2 to 4 hours for one indoor and one outdoor unit
  • Multi-split (2 to 4 rooms): often 1 to 2 days, because each indoor unit needs its own pipe run
  • Ducted or central system in a villa: usually several days, depending on the ductwork
  • VRF system: from a few days for a small site to weeks for a large building

If you're still deciding on the type, our AC installation in Abu Dhabi page explains the options and what each involves.

Split AC Installation: Hour by Hour

A split AC is the most common installation in Abu Dhabi flats and villas, so it's worth knowing how a typical visit runs. The steps below are general. Your own job may differ slightly depending on the wall and the layout.

1
Check and mark upThe technician checks the wall, the outdoor position and the pipe route, then marks the fixing points.
2
Mount the indoor unitThe bracket goes on, a hole is drilled for the pipes and the indoor unit is fixed in place.
3
Fit the outdoor unitThe outdoor unit is secured on its bracket or base, with space around it for airflow.
4
Pipes, drain and wiringRefrigerant pipes, drain line and cables are connected and insulated.
5
Test and handoverThe system is tested, checked for leaks and cooling, and shown to you.

For a simple job, drilling and mounting take the longest. If you have a wall that is hard to drill, our installation team can advise on the best position before work starts.

Central, Ducted and VRF Systems Take Longer

A central or ducted system is a different scale of job. The technicians fit an air handling unit, run or modify ductwork, install grilles, connect the outdoor unit or chiller supply, and then balance the airflow so each room gets the right amount. That takes days, not hours. For a fuller explanation of what these systems do, see our central AC page.

VRF systems add refrigerant piping between one outdoor unit and several indoor units, plus controls and commissioning. The time scales with the number of indoor units and the building layout, and larger sites are often done in stages. Our VRF system page covers what is involved.

If you're replacing an old central system, the old ductwork may be reused, which can save time, but it should be checked first. A duct cleaning visit can also be timed before the new equipment goes in.

Window and Portable Units

A window unit is the fastest installation, usually 1 to 2 hours if the opening is ready and the frame is secure. The work is mostly fitting the unit, sealing gaps and checking the drain direction. If the window has to be cut or adapted, add time. Our window AC page explains what we handle for these units.

What Makes an AC Installation Take Longer?

Most delays come from a handful of things that can be spotted early. The list below covers the common ones.

  • Long pipe runs: a long route between indoor and outdoor units means more pipe, more insulation and more time
  • Hard walls: reinforced concrete is slower to drill than block or plasterboard
  • Electrical readiness: a missing circuit, a full distribution board or a weak supply has to be sorted first
  • Access: high-level work, narrow balconies or podium access need extra equipment and care
  • Removing an old unit: taking out and disposing of the old system adds time
  • Drain route: a condensate line that has to run a long way or uphill needs planning

The electrical side is the most common surprise. If your board needs extra capacity or a new dedicated circuit, our electrical services team can prepare it.

In some cases the board itself is full or too old, and a new DB box installation is needed before the AC goes in. Sorting that first avoids a return visit.

Building Rules and Permissions in Abu Dhabi

In many Abu Dhabi buildings, installation is not only about the technician's speed. Towers and managed communities often ask for a work permit, limit working hours, control lift use and set rules for where outdoor units can go and how pipes are routed. Some also have restrictions on facade changes. Check with your building management or landlord before you book, because getting permission can take longer than the installation itself.

If you're in a managed tower, ask the management office what paperwork they need and how far ahead. Our installation team can tell you which documents towers commonly ask for. For villas, the work is usually simpler, but your landlord or community may still have rules about outdoor unit positions.

Why Rushing an Installation Can Cost You Later

A fast installation is not always a good one. Poor sizing, rough pipework or an unsealed connection can hurt performance for years. An ACHR News report on faulty installations quotes Glenn Hourahan of ACCA saying a typical system can lose about 30 percent of its energy efficiency out of the box because of poor installation. It's a trade report from 2015 and the figure is an industry estimate, but the point stands: quality takes time, and a short job is not necessarily a good job.

Sizing is part of that. A unit that's too small runs flat out and never catches up, and one that's too large cycles on and off. That is why a survey comes before any drilling. If the wrong size has already been fitted, an AC repair and diagnosis visit can check whether the system is struggling for that reason.

The Site Survey: The Step That Saves the Most Time

A survey is where the real installation time is decided. The technician looks at the room size, sun exposure, wall type, electrical supply, pipe route and the best position for both units. This helps avoid the surprises that stretch an install into a second day. For villas with several rooms, our villa AC team can plan the order of work so rooms are cooled in a sensible sequence.

Installation Time Across Abu Dhabi Areas

Where you live affects the job as much as what you install. The points below are general, based on the type of property common in each area.

For a property elsewhere on the island or mainland, the main Abu Dhabi City page lists the areas we serve.

How to Prepare So the Installation Goes Faster

A little preparation can save an hour or more. Clear the area around the indoor and outdoor positions, move furniture away from the wall and protect floors. If you're pairing the install with an AC cleaning of your other units, book both for the same visit. Confirm any building permit in advance and make sure the technician can reach the outdoor spot. If an old unit is being removed, switch it off the day before.

Decide where you want the indoor unit before the visit, and avoid placing it directly above a bed or sofa. Our guide on coping while waiting for AC work has ideas for staying cool in the meantime.

After the Installation: Testing and First Use

A good installer doesn't leave when the unit powers on. They check cooling, listen for noise or vibration, check the drain and look for leaks at the joints. Ask them to show you the remote, the filter and the settings. If refrigerant needs adjusting, that is part of commissioning, not an extra, and our AC gas refill service covers later top-ups when needed.

Ask about the warranty on both the equipment and the workmanship, and keep the paperwork. Then plan your first service so the unit stays in good order. Our AC maintenance service page explains how often to service it.

Questions to Ask Before You Book an Installer

Good answers are specific. A vague promise to finish the same day, with no survey, is a warning sign.

  • Will you visit and survey the property before quoting
  • How long will the job take, and what could extend it
  • Will you handle removal of the old unit
  • What does the warranty cover

If you want to compare options for ongoing care at the same time, see our HVAC services page.

It's also worth asking about a yearly AMC that covers servicing after installation, so the new unit is looked after from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to install an air conditioner?

It depends on the system. A window unit is often done in 1 to 2 hours, a single split AC in about 2 to 4 hours, a multi-split in 1 to 2 days, and ducted, central or VRF systems in several days or longer. These are general ranges, and a site survey gives a firmer estimate.

How long does a split AC installation take?

A single split with one indoor and one outdoor unit usually takes about 2 to 4 hours when the pipe route is short and the electrical supply is ready. Hard walls, long pipe runs or difficult access can add time.

Can an AC be installed in one day?

Window units and single splits usually can be. A multi-split may need one or two days, and ducted, central or VRF installations normally take longer, often in stages.

Why does an installation sometimes take longer than expected?

Common causes are long pipe runs, hard concrete walls, electrical work that was not planned, building access rules, removing an old unit and difficult drain routes. A proper survey helps find these before the work starts.

Do I need building permission before an AC is installed?

Many managed buildings ask for a work permit and set rules on working hours, lift use and outdoor unit positions. Check with your building management or landlord before you book.

Can I use the AC straight after installation?

Once the technician has tested the system and handed it over, you can use it. Ask them to show you the remote, filter and settings, and follow any instructions for your model.

How can I help the installation go faster?

Clear space around the indoor and outdoor positions, confirm any building permit in advance, make sure the technician can reach the outdoor spot, and send photos of the room and electrical board before the visit.

If you're planning a new AC and want a clear time estimate for your property, message or call ALHUD Technical LLC. We'll survey first, explain what could affect the timing and quote a fixed price before any work begins.
